Workshop 1: August 4, 10:00 am – 12:00

Title:

Exemplary Instructional & Assessment Practices for Emergent Bilinguals

Description:

This interactive webinar highlights research-based teaching & assessment practices to help K-12 general and special education teachers design lessons that facilitate language and academic development for emergent bilingual learners.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the two-hour webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Better understand the different profiles of emergent bilinguals
  • Use instructional & assessment practices that are aligned to the different levels of English proficiency of their emergent bilinguals
  • Design lessons and assessment instruments that are differentiated and more sensitive to the needs of emergent bilinguals

    K-12 general education and special education teachers

Workshop 2: August 7, 10:00 am – 12:00

Title:

The Intersections of Bilingualism and Disabilities: Misconceptions, Practices & Assessment

Description:

The presenter will explore some common misconceptions about emergent bilinguals and discuss how some behaviors associated with acquiring a new language may be mistaken by a learning disability. The presenter will introduce a framework to be considered when assessing an emergent bilingual for learning disabilities.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the two-hour webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Dispel the language confusion myth

  • Adopt an instructional & assessment approach grounded on frameworks that emphasize language development and sociocultural contexts that surround emergent bilinguals

Facilitator’s Biography – Solange A. Lopes Murphy, Ph.D.

Solange Lopes Murphy is a teacher educator in the fields of English as a Second Language and Literacy at The College of New Jersey. She has experience teaching English as a Second Language and Foreign Language to PK-12 students as well as undergraduate and graduate students in teacher education programs. Dr. Lopes Murphy has delivered professional development workshops to over 30 districts in New Jersey, in addition to New York, Texas, and Indiana. Her workshops focus on best instructional and assessment practices for emergent bilinguals, differentiated instruction, and strategies to separate a struggle acquiring a new language and a learning disability.
